The Line-Up for 6-4-2010
It was rather difficult for me to put this show together this time. I sort of walked into the station like a zombie and was hard pressed to put things together, but once I heard the Nels Cline album, I knew exactly how to make all this work. This show gets a little out there but if you have grit, you get to enjoy a really great show. Let's get into it.
Maria Neckam - Deeper
It's become standard practice for me to ask Seb for suggestions before putting together a show. He sent me this track to play. I don't play many vocalists but tonight's show is rather vocal heavy. I decided to put much of that singing up front.
Gregory Porter - Black Nile
This is actually a suggestion from JJ to continue with the vocalists. This was also the first time I put together a show with other people in the room listening. It was weird to have other people around instead of me sitting in a room by myself like a crazy man.
Stefon Harris & Blackout - Minor March
It should be pretty clear there are times when I ask myself, "Hey, Retro? When's the last time you played _____?" This time, I plugged Stefon Harris into that blank and here we are.
Tom Scott, Terence Blanchard, & George Duke - Mercy, Mercy, Mercy
I'm not going to give away any secrets but one of these people in this song is going to be doing something special to which I'm attached. More on that down the line.
Kurt Rosenwinkel - Minor Blues
This is another Seb suggestion. I was all too happy to take it because I don't have enough Kurt Rosenwinkel in my life.
Jaspects feat. Janelle Monaé - 2012
Oh sure, everyone's playing Janelle Monaé everywhere now and she's on Letterman, but let's not forget that I've played her on The Line-Up a few times before when she was guesting with Jaspects. Let's not forget these folks used to perform in my coffee shop when I was working for $7.50 an hour and free pastry and then walking back to my Mays Hall dormroom at Morehouse. Now Jaspects are featured on CNN, Monaé is the hottest thing since sliced bread, and I'm... well, I'm getting there. I have a show on the radio and you enjoy it, right listener?
Christian Scott - The Eraser
Yeah, I'm playing Scott's cover of "The Eraser" again. Wanna fight about it?
The Nels Cline Singers - Devining
This album is weird. It stretches the imagination. It's a little difficult to stomach. It's right up my alley. I would expect nothing less awesome from the lead guitarist of Wilco.
Alice Coltrane - Journey in Satchidananda
There are a couple of reasons why this is here. 1) The computer put it here. 2) I've always wanted to hear some Alice Coltrane but never investigated her work. 3) Since it's here, it gives me an excuse to play something else sort of adventurous later.
Flying Lotus - Do the Astral Plane
This is that something adventurous. This may not even fit in the auspice of my show, but I need to get this album anyway and I wanted to hear a track off of it and Flying Lotus is Alice Coltrane's son, so there.
