Putting this show together was a headache like you wouldn't believe. The radio station switched to a new user interface that's faster and sleeker than the old system but also needs a lot of accommodations to fit our non-commercial, jazz needs. I just had to put together an hour, so it's hard to picture the strife the radio staff had to go through this week and all the headaches yet to come. Still, I was able to put together a solid hour of music for you. Today was rather interesting. Early this morning, San Antonio saw its first snowfall since 1985. Some places saw all of 3 inches of snow. Another week, another Line-Up. This week's show sort of felt like pulling teeth, largely because I didn't have a particular theme or focus. Still, I felt like the show turned out alright. Today wrapped up KRTU's Summer mini pledge drive. It went quite well and we closed strong. I even finally ponied up and became a good and proper member of the station myself. A good time was had by all so there's no reason why you shouldn't become a member yourself. We'd be glad to have you. Trust me, it's important. I distinctly remember Gerry Gibbs playing cuts off of Smackwater Jack on his old show on KRTU. This week, I was rather sluggish. Tonight's Line-Up was painstakingly put together to make sure the music was of impeccable quality, possibly to make up for what I find to be lackluster commentary. Add to the fact that the station was running on an analog signal instead of its usually high quality digital and I'd have to say the music was probably the best thing about tonight, but it usually is (as it should). All in all, as my beloved radio bosses say, my job is to deliver the music, so deliver it I shall . Also, is this not the laziest of weekends? Enjoy it. Due to FCC protocols, I can't keep my streams up for long terms. SoundCloud was already doing a good job of that which is why I switched to Humyo, but I figure I'll stay in the rules and only keep streams up for at most a month. 1) Right off the bat, I want to note that I'm going with a new embedded player for the show.  We'll see if I like this better (SoundCloud while pretty had a limit on uploads that I found a little stifling).  Let me know what you think about it. 2) The theme for the show this week was big bands.  I mention this at the start of the show but I really want you to understand, I really don't like big bands.  They're too confining.  It's sort of like a "too many cooks..." scenario.  I like when a soloist has the chance to expand and go crazy.  It's also part of the reason why some of my friends find my music to be a little confusing.  Still, sometimes a big band works and that's what I wanted to do this week. For a preposterously long time, I've held to a rather peculiar rule as it relates to music recommendations. All recommendations that come from friends are ignored for at least three months. For example, a friend of mine told me about a year ago, "Hey, you should check out Esperanza Spalding ." I gave my usual, "Um... yeah. Sure." Shrugged the whole thing off and continued on my merry way. Time passes and she's playing the Newport Jazz Festival this past summer and I decided to give her set a listen on NPR. Sure enough, my friend was right and now I pay her attention. I've even played her a few times on my radio show . The thing is, it took over a year for his wise words to sink in, partially because I like discovering stuff on my own or through the internet.
