I think I'm getting the hang of this new computer system. Yes, the music levels are a little high but I think my coordination is getting better. Either way, there's a pretty good show this week. As is typical fashion for me, I celebrate the major birthdays (at least the ones to me) of jazz musicians that I feel would fit into the scheme of The Line-Up. Joe Sample technically doesn't fit, but I do it anyway. Miles Davis definitely fits so here a Miles Davis episode resides. St. Germain - Sure Thing When it comes to songs that sample Miles Davis, I'm going to run to this song pretty quickly. I mean, it's great on its own accord, but once you take the sample into account, that's the end of the game. Apple Juice Kid - DubApple I actually had another track from Miles Remixed here but the show was running long so I switched it out with this track. I rather like this show. There were some tracks that I managed to lose the night before that didn't make it in this week (really, there was one "oh, no he didn't" track that I wanted to play that would have fit perfectly but it dropped from my memory card so it will have to wait until next week) but I think this week's selections are particularly good. I'm not going to go into a lot of particulars about what today entailed but let me just say you know I love everyone who hears this show when I still put together such great music for you all to hear after a long day like this. It's been long, tiring, but good. With such a runaround day like this, it's perfect to listen to this great music... Gretchen Parlato - Doralice I really think one of the best vocalists we have around today is Gretchen Parlato. She has this cool, breathy delivery that just lets the music speak for itself. This song is also as much a showcase of Lionel Loueke as it is for her. She has this way of letting the song just go, the musicians just work (whether it's with Loueke here or Kendrick Scott or Aaron Parks throughout her In a Dream album), and let her voice be her voice. I'd like to note this was a rather special episode of The Line-Up.  I recorded it on Thanksgiving Day because I spent this evening having the actual dinner with family.  It was generally enjoyable, at least as enjoyable as spending time with family can be before you get tired out. The concept for this show was originally going to be "I'm thankful to have covers."  Most of this episode of the show was covers and remixes or reinterpretations.  I didn't run with that line because it takes me ten takes to do practically everything and after a while, I try to keep things simple in order to not screw things up anymore.  That and a couple songs in this set were originals so that threw things off.
