The Line-Up for 5-4-2012

I still haven't had a lot of ideas lately but the news on the scene has pushed things along. Bill Goodwin and John Scofield - Ida Lupino This song from Solar Energy  is a computer selected song that I have a soft spot for. I made sure to keep it so it nestles quite nicely in the 1 spot. Radiohead - Meeting in the Aisle E.S.T. - Letter from the Leviathan Seriously, why don't I have 301  yet? Romain Collin - The Calling This album is now available everywhere so you have no excuse not to cop it. The Stuyvesants - Roosevelt Projects Jam Session Chick Corea and Stefano Bollani - Jitterbug Waltz This is probably the best version of this song I've ever heard. I've probably said this before and I likely meant it just as much then, too. Miguel Atwood-Fergusson - Hoc 'N Pucky I'll never not like this song. Vijay Iyer Trio - Human Nature Everything on Accelerando  is pure gold. Toro y Moi - Sweet Robert Glasper Experiment - Gonna Be Alright (F.T.B.) fe...

The Line-Up for 10-21-2011

This week's Line-Up is filled with energy, even if half the songs aren't necessarily filled with a lot of instruments. These were some of the most interesting new tracks that I've heard this week... and one the computer picked. Tigran Hamasyan - What the Waves Brought I knew I would be playing the Brad Mehldau & Kevin Hays and Chick Corea & Stefano Bollani tracks this week so I figured some more solo piano would compliment things. Also, it came up in my commute. Múm - Awake on a Train Brad Mehldau & Kevin Hays - Generatrix Modern Music is a good album. It straddles the ground between a classical concert and a jazz performance so it may not really be for everyone. Still, some of the choicer tracks are definitely great picks for the radio. This is  one of those choicer tracks. I'm looking forward to playing others. Chick Corea & Stefano Bollani - Jitterbug Waltz This may possibly be the best version of "Jitterbug Waltz" that I have ever...

The Line-Up for 7-29-2011

Putting this show together was a headache like you wouldn't believe. The radio station switched to a new user interface that's faster and sleeker than the old system but also needs a lot of accommodations to fit our non-commercial, jazz needs. I just had to put together an hour, so it's hard to picture the strife the radio staff had to go through this week and all the headaches yet to come. Still, I was able to put together a solid hour of music for you. Roy Hargrove Big Band - Roy Allen A few tracks from Hargrove's Emergence are in rotation on my iPod right now which led me to the usual question, "When's the last time I played _____?" Darcy James Argue's Secret Society - Redeye Same thing here but I know I had to have played this more recently than Hargrove because Sebastien Noelle is a beast . Terri Lyne Carrington - Unconditional Love Hands down, this is my favorite cut from The Mosaic Project . Carrington is very tight all throughout this t...

The Line-Up for 6-10-2011

It was a grind putting this week's Line-Up together but all's well that ends well, eh? I'm not even sure if it's a great episode. I've got doubts. I don't like the combinations. But these shows work out well anyway. Corea, Clark & White - Captain Marvel I like that this group is still getting together and making good work. I'll never shy away from playing stuff like this, no matter how old they get. That just means they're growing even more chops. Madlib - Stormy Whenever I'm stuck putting a playlist together, I know I can never go wrong with Madlib, especially with Shades of Blue . Gerald Clayton - Snake Bite I revisit this album a lot lately, don't I? Well, it's good. Béla Fleck and the Flecktones - Life in Eleven I am most impressed with this album and its amalgamation of styles. Rocket Science is a quality album. Jeff Lederer - Snake in the Blackberry Patch One of the advantages of being at a radio station is that there a...

The Line-Up for 12-3-2010

It's all Grammy nominees and stuff getting attention for this week. Ultimately, you're hearing what you should be hearing, because this show is great and informative... or something. The Bad Plus - Super America I must say, I'm not wowed by The Bad Plus' latest album, but there's still no such thing as a bad TBP album. There's always some gems in their work, and this is certainly a simple little gem from Never Stop . Esperanza Spalding - Winter Sun How do you get nominated for Best New Artist when most everyone in your field knows who you are, you've started and ended your work in academia while everyone in your field knew you, you performed for the President of the United States at the White House twice, and for the same president while he got his Nobel Peace Prize in Oslo. If this qualifies as new, I don't know what's going on. Darcy James Argue 's Secret Society - Phobos Who saw this Grammy nomination coming? Did anyone? Of course he ...

The Line-Up for 12-29-2010

I'm feeling pretty good about this week's Line-Up. I think it's well put together. I think it has the right touches of the right moods. I think it has a good energy to it. I'm actually live in the studio for stuff but the song order and arrangement was done in advanced and blends together fairly well. It covers a broad spectrum of periods but meshes. It has a full body and a nice aroma with a hint of hickory and elderberries. Etc, etc. Ray Vega & Thomas Marriott - Big Brother I was sort of expecting this to be a cover of Stevie Wonder's song, a la what Vijay Iyer is doing lately, but it's its own creature, and a fine one at that. Good computer selection to top things off. Chick Corea - The Great Pumpkin Waltz I'm not really a Halloween person. I wasn't raised up with it and even though I try to take parts in some of the holiday now that I'm older, I'm just not huge about it. Still, I'm a sucker for Vince Guaraldi compositions and I...

The Line-Up for 5-14-2010

Tonight's episode of The Line-Up is the typical grab bag of stuff from the KRTU library, stuff that came to mind, and a couple of new things I've been playing a lot that you can also hear over at Nextbop . I swear, the more I work on that site, the more Nextbop and The Line-Up seem to go hand in hand. Gerald Clayton - Love All Around Clayton is quickly becoming one of my favorite musicians, plus I think his dreads are awesome . Ahmad Jamal - The Blooming Flower I must be honest. The computer picked this one, but the computer usually doesn't lead me astray. Lizz Wright - Afro Blue Wright is peforming at the Carver Community Cultural Center next month . That's something for which San Antonians can wait on pins and needles. I'll likely have more to say about that in the coming weeks but getting the word and her talent out now isn't a bad idea. Sound Directions - On the Hill I try not to go too long on the show without playing some Madlib. Avishai Cohen -...

The Line-Up for 2-19-2010

This week, I was rather sluggish. Tonight's Line-Up was painstakingly put together to make sure the music was of impeccable quality, possibly to make up for what I find to be lackluster commentary. Add to the fact that the station was running on an analog signal instead of its usually high quality digital and I'd have to say the music was probably the best thing about tonight, but it usually is (as it should). All in all, as my beloved radio bosses say, my job is to deliver the music, so deliver it I shall . Brad Mehldau - House on Hill As much as I love Mehldau, I don't really have a lot of background with the House on Hill  album. I know where it existed in its context but I never gravitated to it since it was a coverless album. That's a mistake on my part since every time I hear a cut off of it, I fall in love and kick myself. Darcy James Argue's Secret Society - Redeye Infernal Machines  has a lot of moments on it where you marvel in the landscape Argue pai...

The Line-Up for 1-22-2010

I don't really have much to say tonight outside of the playlist other than you should read my latest post on Nextbop  on why jazz shouldn't seem like such a scary old genre of music. Also, is this not the laziest of weekends? Enjoy it. Due to FCC protocols, I can't keep my streams up for long terms. SoundCloud was already doing a good job of that which is why I switched to Humyo, but I figure I'll stay in the rules and only keep streams up for at most a month. So, I'm going back to SoundCloud for the streams. Streams of the last two weeks are also still available at KRTU's archives . The Terrence Blanchard Group - D's Choice Jacky Terrasson & Michael Brecker - What's Wrong With You! Roy Hargrove - Family St. Germain - Sure Thing Chick Corea & Hiromi - Summertime Jaspects - Uppity Negro Joshua Redman - Yesterdays Brad Mehldau - Secret Beach
