I don't really have much special to say for this week's show. I had a pretty good birthday and a shoutout in the LA Times so I'm feeling pretty good. This week's show should reflect that. Kneebody - Teddy Ruxpin I had hopes I could get up to Austin and check out their show this week but my ride fell through. I'm a little disappointed but I can only get all Zen-like and say I am where I should be and leave things at that. Still, this is what I was missing. Ben Allison - Some Day We'll All Be Free It's my birthday so I'm playing one of my favorite songs of the year. I owe it to myself. Much of the music I've gotten this week were live recordings so much of the music on this week's Line-Up will reflect that. Not much to say, really. Terri Lyne Carrington - Unconditional Love I've yet to sit down and listen to this album in a sitting but generally when tracks come up randomly in shuffle, I've been impressed. Booker T. Jones - The Vamp I keep coming back to this album. The Road From Memphis really is my favorite album of the year so far. David Weiss & Point of Departure - I Have A Dream Snuck In and Snuck Out are albums recorded as the first and second sets of a night at New York City's Jazz Standard. That had to have been a hot night in NYC. Kneebody - You Have One Unheard Message This was a last minute add to the show. I had an older Kneebody track in this slot but I just got some new material from the band. This is all in anticipation of their upcoming show in Austin next week . I'm pretty psyched about it. This is one of those shows that came together in an odd way. I had an idea for what I wanted to do when I headed to the station, scrapped much of it while putting the show together, and now I'm oddly proud of this mix. Hopefully you'll feel the same. Also, someone let me know if the descriptions I add for each track is really necessary. I think I may cut them out completely after a while. The intros are a must, but the whole "why I picked this track at this spot" thing may not be necessary, unless I'm linking something important or something. I'm still mulling it over. This is a sign of my dedication. I still came up to this station on the day after Thanksgiving to put this show together. Needless to say, I'm not feeling like doing a lot of banter. Hopefully, the music makes up for my aversion from my normal loquacious nature. After some snags this last week, we've had a whirlwind past couple of days. There's a bunch of talk going on about how we should approach booking shows, with or without opening acts and for how much pay. It got pretty messy but also pretty fun. Check it out. Russell Gunn - Footprints Aaron Prado has returned to KRTU San Antonio for the summer. This is the man who crafted the sound of the station and we're all pleased as punch to have him back. This week is a combination of perfect songs showing up in the library at the proper time, a certain degree of reconciliations with what I do and do not own, and good old fashioned references to stuff from next week. Just your standard episode of The Line-Up. Esbjörn Svensson Trio - In My Garage Sometimes I just like to not go too long on this show without playing E.S.T. No real reason why this is here; Svennson came to mind so I put this here at the top of the hour. Leon Thomas - China Doll KRTU has a bump that uses this song. Sometimes the bump plays and I think it's a rather nice song but I never knew the song's name. The library chose to play this song so I gave it a listen and lo and behold, it was the song from the bump. Plus, this is Leon Thomas, who I really only know as the guy who's singing in Pharoah Sanders' "The Creator Has a Master Plan." If you don't notice that, you will by the time you get to the moaning. Because my editor is rather slow lately, you'll get to see my latest Nextbop post once he gets around to putting it on the site. This week the audio should be better , I feel I didn't slip up as much and I think the show went alright. Let me know if you agree.
