It's maybe one of my favorite times of year-- Jazz 91.7 FM spring membership drive time! I get to hang out at the station more than usual and really feel like I earn my keep. That and I am somehow more chipper than I am in any other context. Hopefully, that energy is conveyed in this week's show which still comes with great new music. I had not a single clue what to play this week. I've spent so much time preparing for year-end lists that I had to cobble together a show for this week. Next week, I'll likely play cuts from my personal favorite albums of 2012 and the following week will feature our staff lists. But for this week, here's just some all around good music. This song has been rattling around on a list of songs I needed to play for a couple of weeks and I finally got the time to fit it in. Gonjasufi - Blaksuit Lauren Desberg - Mister Magic This girl is beloved . Like, seriously. From the sound of this new EP of hers , I can tell why. It was a grind putting this week's Line-Up together but all's well that ends well, eh? I'm not even sure if it's a great episode. I've got doubts. I don't like the combinations. But these shows work out well anyway. Corea, Clark & White - Captain Marvel I like that this group is still getting together and making good work. I'll never shy away from playing stuff like this, no matter how old they get. That just means they're growing even more chops. Madlib - Stormy Whenever I'm stuck putting a playlist together, I know I can never go wrong with Madlib, especially with Shades of Blue . Gerald Clayton - Snake Bite I revisit this album a lot lately, don't I? Well, it's good. Béla Fleck and the Flecktones - Life in Eleven I am most impressed with this album and its amalgamation of styles. Rocket Science is a quality album. You know, I'm still sort of tired from last weekend? I'm looking forward to spending this weekend bundled up in my room where it may or may not rain and the weather may or may not be brisk but still significantly warmer than everyone else's mid-November (hey, it's still South Texas). This show should be a good precursor of all that. Nadav Snir-Zelniker - Pizmon Layakinton (Song for the Hyacinth) The computer picked this one, but it only took me two tries to pronounce this name in a manageable way. I hope I said it right. At least the song is good. Cassandra Wilson - Beneath a Silver Moon People are really liking Cassandra Wilson's new album. I of course read Nate Chinen's review of it. Then I later saw Paste had a review as well. That ultimately meant I had to give it some attention, post haste. I decided to branch out pretty far with The Line-Up. This will happen from time to time. I'll decide to play some music a little further out from the show's comfort zone and then reel myself back in for the subsequent week. This week was provoked by my pulling Bonobo's Black Sands from the station's "No" shelf. I thought it was different but still sort of jazzy, so it found its way onto this week's show. Then the rest of the hour sort of formed around this one song. Robert Glasper - Maiden Voyage/Everything in its Right Place I figured I would want to start a little light. I want the audience to warm up, so I started with Robert Glasper. If you listen to The Line-Up, you know his work. It's courageous but palatable. It signifies that if I start the hour with Glasper, we're going to be taking some twists and turns, but it'll still be a pretty good ride. If you've been paying attention to me in other venues , I'm right now in Austin for SXSW and likely listening to non-jazz music. These ears have many loves, I'll tell you. But that doesn't mean I slacked off on putting together a great episode of The Line-Up. Nor did I slack off on my writing for Nextbop (in fact, I made a buffer in posts because I know how I am).
