Rarely does 4/20 fall on a Friday so I have been pretty excited to put this show together for a few weeks now. Hopefully my song choices lived up to this show's potential. Todd Clouser - Little Boxes I hope I wasn't trying to be too clever in this song choice. Okay, maybe I was trying to be too clever with this selection. Rel - On My Way The Bad Plus feat. Wendy Lewis - Comfortably Numb   I had this song here as a marker until I could come up with what I figured would be a better idea. Ultimately, I realized this song was kismet after all. Oh, yes, it's that time again. I don't have to worry so much about new music and the scene but I get to reflect on my favorite musician and his impact on jazz overall. Plus, I get to devote almost an entire hour to the 1970s, likely my favorite decade for music. The Joe Sample episode of The Line-Up has become a tradition for me and I'm always glad to continue it. Even groans around the radio station have lessened this time around. Even when Joe plays smooth, he plays it right and this show, with its heavy fusion vibe, should reflect that. Joe Sample - Hippies on a Corner This is likely the most modern track I play this week and even it's from 1995. This song is one of my major memories of Sample. I recall his tour hitting San Antonio shortly after Old Places, Old Faces released and my parents taking my sister and I to see it. We actually chanted for him to play this song. I hadn't a clue what I was going to talk about or play today. Not only did I have a Line-Up to put together but I was also featured on KRTU's Jazz Break at Noon to talk about Nextbop and jazz today. Oddly enough, this all worked out. I feel good about the interview and I feel really good about this playlist. Yes, it's that time of year again. February 1 is right around the corner so it's time for the Joe Sample episode of The Line-Up. Sample is the man whose career I have adored since I was a small child and I feel I owe it to him to celebrate his birthday every year. I always had when I grew up so it was only natural that I'd do the same with The Line-Up. Also, I rather like celebrating the birthdays of jazz musicians while they're still alive. Folks deserve their due recognition while they're here. Joe Sample - Black and White (As Simple As) My favorite Joe Sample album has to be 1996's Old Places Old Faces . The one time I was able to see him perform live was while he was touring around this album. I distinctly recall the cold night at Sunken Gardens, my sister clearly the youngest at that concert and still with some knowledge of the songs (I was 10 at the time). I really had no clue what to play for this week. I almost just put together a whole show of Radiohead covers (that could still happen at some point). Still, I put together a show with a good mix of new and old that came together pretty well with little hints here and there for next week's show commemorating Joe Sample's birthday (on February 1st). This is one of those shows that came together in an odd way. I had an idea for what I wanted to do when I headed to the station, scrapped much of it while putting the show together, and now I'm oddly proud of this mix. Hopefully you'll feel the same. Also, someone let me know if the descriptions I add for each track is really necessary. I think I may cut them out completely after a while. The intros are a must, but the whole "why I picked this track at this spot" thing may not be necessary, unless I'm linking something important or something. I'm still mulling it over.
