Not much to say, I just wanted to make sure I played what was on my mind as usual. Sound Directions - Dice Game/Wanda Vidal The computer picked this one but this is one of my favorite Madlib tracks so it definitely stayed. THEESatisfaction - Juiced Scott Tixier - Bushwick Party I had the idea of doing a violin set (that sort of fell apart when I added Maria Neckam at the end, but meh). Zach Brock - Drifting Last week, I played some Zach Brock as an icebreaker to his new album, Almost Never Was . This week, he's broken into the show. Maria Neckam - Your Kindness This album, Unison ,  has been floating around the station for a few weeks now and I finally got ahold of it to play. It's twisty and turny and pretty cool. Rarely does 4/20 fall on a Friday so I have been pretty excited to put this show together for a few weeks now. Hopefully my song choices lived up to this show's potential. Todd Clouser - Little Boxes I hope I wasn't trying to be too clever in this song choice. Okay, maybe I was trying to be too clever with this selection. Rel - On My Way The Bad Plus feat. Wendy Lewis - Comfortably Numb   I had this song here as a marker until I could come up with what I figured would be a better idea. Ultimately, I realized this song was kismet after all. Medeski Scofield Martin and Wood - Legalize It It's a little overt, but isn't 4/20 all about overtness?   Daedelus - Madlib Bonus Beats Portico Quartet - Ruins Yep, this album is still in rotation. I had only vague ideas on what to do this week for the show. It took some twisting and turning to figure out what songs to play this week but I feel that this is a particularly strong show this week. You be the judge. Gregory Porter - Bling Bling This album is amazing. It instantly lifts your spirits. It's makes you think of home. It's everything a jazz vocal album should be. It oddly reminds me of early Will Downing. Be Good  is just great. Jonti - Twirligig Johnathan Blake - Blue News Things are all coming together for the Johnathan Blake album stream. Are you excited? Jack DeJohnette - Sonny Light I'm still liking Sound Travels . Geri Allen & Timeline - In Appreciation This should be a good show at the McAllister Auditorium on Sunday. This week's Line-Up is filled with energy, even if half the songs aren't necessarily filled with a lot of instruments. These were some of the most interesting new tracks that I've heard this week... and one the computer picked. Tigran Hamasyan - What the Waves Brought I knew I would be playing the Brad Mehldau & Kevin Hays and Chick Corea & Stefano Bollani tracks this week so I figured some more solo piano would compliment things. Also, it came up in my commute. Múm - Awake on a Train Brad Mehldau & Kevin Hays - Generatrix Modern Music is a good album. It straddles the ground between a classical concert and a jazz performance so it may not really be for everyone. Still, some of the choicer tracks are definitely great picks for the radio. This is  one of those choicer tracks. I'm looking forward to playing others. I spent all week putting the playlist for this Line-Up together. I meticulously entered track by track into an Evernote, taking a whole week to cobble together a good show. I figured I was completely wrapped by Thursday only to find I had a little more time to fill and fill it I did. That's how much effort I give to all this. It takes a whole week to put a show together. Anthony Wilson - Transition Campo Belo is a pleasant album, in a good way. Usually when I say an album is "pleasant", I mean that it's nice to play but not particularly evocative. I may play a pleasant album only once and forget it soon after. Wilson's latest album does not fit this bill in the least. I've been thoroughly enjoying it ever since I got it last week. Russell Gunn - Blue In Green This is the only track that I didn't have already figured out earlier in the week. Tonight's episode of The Line-Up is the typical grab bag of stuff from the KRTU library, stuff that came to mind, and a couple of new things I've been playing a lot that you can also hear over at Nextbop . I swear, the more I work on that site, the more Nextbop and The Line-Up seem to go hand in hand. Gerald Clayton - Love All Around Clayton is quickly becoming one of my favorite musicians, plus I think his dreads are awesome . Ahmad Jamal - The Blooming Flower I must be honest. The computer picked this one, but the computer usually doesn't lead me astray. Lizz Wright - Afro Blue Wright is peforming at the Carver Community Cultural Center next month . That's something for which San Antonians can wait on pins and needles. I'll likely have more to say about that in the coming weeks but getting the word and her talent out now isn't a bad idea. If I can even remember to post this from my phone tonight, it would be a feat. If you've been paying attention to me in other venues , I'm right now in Austin for SXSW and likely listening to non-jazz music. These ears have many loves, I'll tell you. But that doesn't mean I slacked off on putting together a great episode of The Line-Up. Nor did I slack off on my writing for Nextbop (in fact, I made a buffer in posts because I know how I am). I can't stress enough that you head over to KRTU and pledge a donation to the station, although I did try to stress pretty hard over at Nextbop . I keep saying I work at the most awesome station on earth (for free at that) and it's so awesome because of the support from its listeners. Otherwise, shows like tonight's wouldn't exist.
