This week's show is the third anniversary of my helming the Line-Up and the first Line-Up of the KRTU 2012 Fall pledge drive, so there's double the reasons for me to be excited this week. It's the last day of the Jazz 91.7 Spring Pledge Drive 2012 and it's been a pretty fun week. I got to hang out at the radio station all week. It's been a particularly fun week of content and discourse with Nextbop. Vijay Iyer Trio - MmmHmm Accelerando  keeps getting love from me. Also, I felt like playing some Thundercat twice over for some odd reason (I close the show with Bruner proper). Mister Barrington - Helter's Kelter Phronesis - Upside Down Phronesis just dropped a new album, Walking Dark , on us this week and it's quite good. This week's show is sort of heavy on piano trios. I've always had a soft spot for them and as this show can attest, they're capable of a lot. I didn't acknowledge this on the show but this episode of the Line-Up falls on Friday the 13th. So... yeah... there's that. I probably didn't say anything because it's not all that important. What is  important, though, is new music. Also important is that I can confirm a couple of our acts who will be performing at the KRTU/Nextbop day party at the Red House Pizzeria  in Austin, Texas, on March 14th during the South by SouthWest festival (which links up quite nicely to the KRTU/ Music for Listeners day party the rest of that week). Yet another great show filled with stuff that's played throughout my week and filtered into an hour for the masses. Oh, and I didn't say it on the air but check out Jonti. It's the first episode of the show with the new theme song, Christian Scott 's cover of Thom Yorke's "The Eraser". I'm sort of excited about that. Other than that, it's an altogether great show even without the new glossy cover. Chris Dingman - Indian Hill I hadn't played any Dingman in a while but it seemed appropriate since it seems he's getting a whole bunch of great attention now that his album is out. Cloning Americana - On the Rise Kory got ahold of this album recently and has spoken quite highly of this group. I like what I heard and much like anything else on this show, I yoinked the idea and played it here. Francisco Mela & Cuban Safari - Toma Del Poder I first got this album last week and it was one of the biggest surprises of that week. This is definitely worth copping. There isn't one overall theme or idea this week, just little sets that seem to fit together to me for the most part. Also, I made it a point 1) that my music beds on my mic breaks actually work this week and 2) that all my music beds for my mic breaks are MF DOOM beats. The Roots - Teen Town There are tracks that I have added to the system specifically because I need really short selections to fill in time. I love Owen Biddle, I swear I do (that's part of the reason why I play Booker T. Jones later in the show, The Roots deserve their due props), but this song is here specifically because it's 50 seconds long. Besides, isn't it cool when the show starts at such breakneck speed? I don't think I have anything special to say about this show in its entirety except that I'm pretty happy with it. The songs, and my subsequent commentary on them, should speak for themselves. Christian Scott - Isadora It seemed befitting to start the show off giving congratulations to the fresh engagement of Nextbop's good friend, Christian Scott, to his beloved Isadora Mendez. This is actually the first time in a few weeks in which I walked into the studio without a concept for a show already in mind. Fortunately, I managed to pull together some more new stuff from some folks I've been playing lately and the computer also got my back this week by throwing in some pretty choice cuts. Altogether, your standard awesome jazz show out of San Antonio. Kyle Eastwood - Hot Box This was a computer selection but I rather like the idea of the son of Clint Eastwood as a jazz bassist with a song called "Hot Box." It is a glorious day. Radiohead pulled the okey-doke on us all and released The King of Limbs a day in advance. I actually had planned to play this album in th mic breaks this evening anyway since I hoped to get the album around noon (since that's about midnight in England) but the push up in release made things much simpler. It's a good album. Not their best, but good. But I'm gushing too much about non-jazz issues. Here's this week's Line-Up. Benjamin Drazen - Inner Flights I just got Drazen's Inner Flights album this week and thought it was pretty good. It's pretty straight ahead but nice. I had an idea that I wanted to carry out for this week's Line-Up based largely on Flying Lotus' takeover of Benji B's show on BBC radio a couple of weeks ago. I listened to this set recently and I felt my life changing. I was rethinking jazz and radio and music in general and I just had to bring some of that vibe to The Line-Up this week. I think this is the most chill I've ever sounded on the radio. This may have been one of my favorite shows to have ever put together. Plus, I finally figured out how to play music in the background of my talking! Boy, is that ever complicated. Ralph Bowen - Drumheller Valley I always say that if you really want to impress me musically, get at me in my commute, especially while walking. If I can really feel walking to your song, you'll essentially open me up to the rest of your work.
