Finally, we have reached the Nextbop's Best Jazz of 2012 episode of The Line-Up. It's a pinnacle. It's an event. It's the radio version of reading a list. It's like the jazz version of Casey Kasim. It's like another simile in a list. Lionel Loueke - African Ship I tried as hard as I could to squeeze this into the show. It's a rare event when I can manage to get ten jazz songs into an hour on this show but I just loved Loueke's Heritage that much. Christian Scott - Van Gogh Marcus Miller - Gorée This band has had a fascinating year. They've been culled together through Miller's continuing a legacy. They put out a really great album. They've traveled the world and they have the battle scars to prove it. Miller's Renaissance band are just an awesome group of folks. As usual, the show is a combination of ideas I've collected throughout the week and picks the computer left but I'm particularly happy with my new approach to blending tracks together. I'm really happy with my handiwork in that department. The song selection ain't half bad, either. Rarely does 4/20 fall on a Friday so I have been pretty excited to put this show together for a few weeks now. Hopefully my song choices lived up to this show's potential. It's the last day of the Jazz 91.7 Spring Pledge Drive 2012 and it's been a pretty fun week. I got to hang out at the radio station all week. It's been a particularly fun week of content and discourse with Nextbop. Vijay Iyer Trio - MmmHmm Accelerando  keeps getting love from me. Also, I felt like playing some Thundercat twice over for some odd reason (I close the show with Bruner proper). Much of the music I've gotten this week were live recordings so much of the music on this week's Line-Up will reflect that. Not much to say, really. Terri Lyne Carrington - Unconditional Love I've yet to sit down and listen to this album in a sitting but generally when tracks come up randomly in shuffle, I've been impressed. Booker T. Jones - The Vamp I keep coming back to this album. The Road From Memphis really is my favorite album of the year so far. David Weiss & Point of Departure - I Have A Dream Snuck In and Snuck Out are albums recorded as the first and second sets of a night at New York City's Jazz Standard. It's times like these that I feel like a legitimate DJ, although one would think after a year and a half of doing this and the good responses I get, that feeling would have sunk in by now. Somehow I managed to put together a show made up primarily of completely new music. A whole lot of stuff I got was painstakingly entered into the computers for your enjoyment. Today was rather interesting. Early this morning, San Antonio saw its first snowfall since 1985. Some places saw all of 3 inches of snow. Yes, it's not a lot but it is for us and it caused much of the city to shut down. Still I'm a professional so I made sure to get a show to you this week and a good one it is, too. Joe Sample feat. This is one of those shows that came together in an odd way. I had an idea for what I wanted to do when I headed to the station, scrapped much of it while putting the show together, and now I'm oddly proud of this mix. Hopefully you'll feel the same. Also, someone let me know if the descriptions I add for each track is really necessary. I think I may cut them out completely after a while. The intros are a must, but the whole "why I picked this track at this spot" thing may not be necessary, unless I'm linking something important or something. I'm still mulling it over. This week's show is a continuation of my column for this week . I figured that if I was going to speak at length about how to make a good cover, I should have some good examples.
