The Line-Up for 4-29-2011

Once again, I have a week of really great new music. It's times like these that I feel like a legitimate DJ, although one would think after a year and a half of doing this and the good responses I get, that feeling would have sunk in by now. So goes my cycle of perpetual doubt. Anyway... music...

Ambrose Akinmusire - The Walls of Lechuguilla
Once again, I'm playing Akinmusire in the 1 spot. Also, pronouncing "Akinmusire" is much simpler than pronouncing "Lechuguilla". You have no idea how much practice I had to do with that.
Becca Stevens Band - There is a Light That Never Goes Out
I honestly don't know enough about The Smiths, but I know I like this cover. That and I thought Zooey Deschannel was cute when she sang this in the elevator in 500 Days of Summer. That's enough for me to play this song this evening. Plus, Becca Stevens' Weightless is an awesome album.
James Farm - Polliwog
Joshua Redman, Aaron Parks, Matt Penman, Eric Harland. You can't go wrong with that combo. It's like Ocean's 4 or something.
Ben Allison - Some Day We'll All Be Free
I have been playing this song constantly for the last two weeks. I'd find any excuse to play it. It dictated many walks and bus commutes. Jason Lindner does no wrong on this track. Donny Hathaway would be glad.
Neil Cowley - Stereoface
Seb finally posted tracks from Cowley's latest album, Radio Silence, to Nextbop. As you know, when Seb gets something, I get something. So when I get something, you hear something. Here's that something.
Marco Benevento - Coffee Cold
Another new acquisition is a live album Benevento just released and we've posted to Nextbop. This is just a taste of that legit bootleg. Very nice stuff.
The Bad Plus - Gaston
This is actually one of the better tracks off Everybody Wants to Be a Cat, Disney Jazz Vol. 1.
Bonobo - We Could Forever
This is one of those line straddles in which it's not exactly jazz but I still feel like it contains enough jazz elements that it could fit in the show. Plus, the next track needed a pair so I figured the reach was necessary. Besides, it's not like I didn't think Bonobo's Black Sands isn't great, because it totally is.
Marlena Shaw - California Soul (Diplo/Mad Decent Remix)
I love when I'm fishing around the library to figure out what to play and stuff like this comes up.
Becca Stevens Band- My Girls
I figured an Animal Collective cover is the perfect way to end the show. Right?

I had intended for my next post to be about America's socio-economic economy, but I'll save that for a little bit later. To Be Young, Gifted, Black, and a Jazz Enthusiast: Apparent Needle in a Haystack

About a month ago, Patrick Jarenwattananon of NPR's A Blog Supreme  put together a group of lists of recent gateway jazz albums from prominent young jazz enthusiasts and bloggers.  The Jazz Now Project was a rather brilliant idea and opened up a lot of discussion and awareness about the future of jazz and really shows what the field looks like right now.  Early on the the culmination of this project, Jarenwattananon opened the submission of suggestions not only to those he specifically asked but also to other readers of the blog and on the email list.  So it didn't take me long for me to submit my own Jazz Now list .  (And special thanks to him for linking the post on the compilation of Jazz Now submissions. I got my highest hit count yet of 29 readers because of him. I really need more readers.) 2022: I Lost My Father and Got Into Milton Nascimento

"There are years that ask questions and years that answer." --Zora Neale Hurston, Their Eyes Were Watching God Folks have been bandying that quotation around the last few weeks on Twitter, the social network that just won't quit no matter what literal Apartheid-era Afrikaner and dumb Bond villain does to stomp all over it, asking what 2022 was for them. I didn't know after ruminating on it for some time, ultimately joking it was a year that made very pointed, declarative statements about how my life herein would go in some ways and made phrases that trailed off into nothing, leaving me to guess its intentions in others. It was a year of feast and famine as my years often are, and always interesting, as I often hope my life is. I wasn't not entertained, even when I was sad or even when I was irritated, and that's always been my hope to approach life that way. But I still don't know what this year was to me.
