I'm feeling much less under the weather than I was last week, still the cough is still nagging while the music this week is still banging.

Gretchen Parlato - Juju
I am quite happy with Parlato's latest album, The Lost and Found. I think she's moving forward as a musician and vocalist quite well. She's making interesting song selections and the Robert Glasper touch in production shows quite well. She's growing into one of the great jazz vocalists of our era.
Austin Peralta - Capricornus
I asked myself when was the last time I played some Austin Peralta. I'm still loving Endless Planets so it had to have been too long.
Jason Parker - Way to Blue
The biggest surprise of Parker's latest album, Five Leaves Left: A Tribute to Nick Drake, is Josh Rawlings on piano. When he cuts loose, these songs really play.
Noah Preminger - Quickening
Computer selection, leaving it at that
Mostly Other People Do the Killing - Round Bottom, Square Top
Folks have been talking about this group for some time and I have yet to ever hear any of their stuff... until now.
Stevie Wonder - Contusion
I realize I haven't played this song in a while so I figured it was time for it to resurface.
Mickey and the Soul Generation - Chocolate
This soul set just sort of grew and grew from songs the computer picked into all I could cram into a certain amount of time. By the time I had arranged everything, I ended up with this selection here.
George Benson - Water Brother
The same could be said for this track here. After a while, I asked what was short and could fit here in this time slot so I don't go over time too much for the hour. I think these picks paid off.
Herbie Hancock - The Essence feat. Chaka Khan
Not a lot of people talk about Hancock's 2001 album, Future 2 Future. It's not really one of his best ones but there are still some pretty good tracks on it and it's worth a revisiting spin every now and again. Let this track here be a jogging of your memory of an album that's still pretty decent, even though folks may have not have fully embraced it when it dropped ten years ago. Besides, is there ever not a time for Chaka Khan?
Christian McBride - The Wizard of Montara
The computer actually chose another McBride song to close out the show but as I started playing songs, I had to rearrange stuff for time and this shorter tune fit. Not a bad replacement, either.

I had intended for my next post to be about America's socio-economic economy, but I'll save that for a little bit later. I was just reading through my normal load of publications and I ran across a brief article that bothered me so much upon reading it that I just had to write something about it. To Be Young, Gifted, Black, and a Jazz Enthusiast: Apparent Needle in a Haystack

About a month ago, Patrick Jarenwattananon of NPR's A Blog Supreme  put together a group of lists of recent gateway jazz albums from prominent young jazz enthusiasts and bloggers.  The Jazz Now Project was a rather brilliant idea and opened up a lot of discussion and awareness about the future of jazz and really shows what the field looks like right now.  Early on the the culmination of this project, Jarenwattananon opened the submission of suggestions not only to those he specifically asked but also to other readers of the blog and on the email list.  So it didn't take me long for me to submit my own Jazz Now list .  (And special thanks to him for linking the post on the compilation of Jazz Now submissions. I got my highest hit count yet of 29 readers because of him. I really need more readers.) 2022: I Lost My Father and Got Into Milton Nascimento

"There are years that ask questions and years that answer." --Zora Neale Hurston, Their Eyes Were Watching God Folks have been bandying that quotation around the last few weeks on Twitter, the social network that just won't quit no matter what literal Apartheid-era Afrikaner and dumb Bond villain does to stomp all over it, asking what 2022 was for them. I didn't know after ruminating on it for some time, ultimately joking it was a year that made very pointed, declarative statements about how my life herein would go in some ways and made phrases that trailed off into nothing, leaving me to guess its intentions in others. It was a year of feast and famine as my years often are, and always interesting, as I often hope my life is. I wasn't not entertained, even when I was sad or even when I was irritated, and that's always been my hope to approach life that way. But I still don't know what this year was to me.
