I had not a single clue what to play this week. I've spent so much time preparing for year-end lists that I had to cobble together a show for this week. Next week, I'll likely play cuts from my personal favorite albums of 2012 and the following week will feature our staff lists. But for this week, here's just some all around good music. Jones - The Hive I've been letting my Google Music wild out and upload more of my music to the cloud lately so my commute on shuffle has a hell of a lot more selection. This allows things like Booker T. Jones' The Road from Memphis  from last year stay accessible from almost everywhere, and fresh on my mind, and still just a thought away from showing up in a Line-Up because it still rocks me to the core. I had a conflict with this week's show. I came down with a cold on Wednesday that mutated into a full-blown flu on Thursday. While I seemed to have sweat much of it out Thursday evening, it still lingered by Friday. So, then comes a crucial question-- do I not head into the station or do I suck it up? I entertained the idea of not going in, but I got too much awesome new music lately. So I tossed down 2,500 mg of vitamin C and made my way to the KRTU studios to put together what I consider a pretty damn good Line-Up. Aaron Koppel Quartet - Earlids I have Multiverse  in rotation even though I don't talk about it much. It's a pretty good album, though. Definitely worth some air time. It's pledge drive time again-- the time when I hang out at the radio station a little more than usual and pounce every time I hear a phone ring. It's one of my favorite times of the year and you can be a part of it, too, by heading over to KRTU.org  and pledging a donation to the station. Becoming a member is pretty rad, to which I can attest. This week's show involves me saying that a lot, it also has some pretty good music. Taylor Eigsti - Daylight This popped up on the commute. Also, I didn't get to go to the Austin City Limits Festival a couple weeks ago and heard Coldplay did a great job. This is in reference to that. Once again, I have a week of really great new music. It's times like these that I feel like a legitimate DJ, although one would think after a year and a half of doing this and the good responses I get, that feeling would have sunk in by now. So goes my cycle of perpetual doubt. Anyway... music... Ambrose Akinmusire - The Walls of Lechuguilla Once again, I'm playing Akinmusire in the 1 spot. Also, pronouncing "Akinmusire" is much simpler than pronouncing "Lechuguilla". You have no idea how much practice I had to do with that. Becca Stevens Band - There is a Light That Never Goes Out I honestly don't know enough about The Smiths, but I know I like this cover. That and I thought Zooey Deschannel was cute when she sang this in the elevator in 500 Days of Summer . That's enough for me to play this song this evening. I wasn't quite sure what kind of show I'd end up doing this week. I had a few songs scrawled on a Post-It like I often do to prepare each show, but I still didn't have a big idea for the week. All I knew was that I wanted to do something different. Well, I combed through some new stuff I got, thought about different sounds that are pleasing but challenging, and went a little off the beaten path through computer here to put together a pretty great show. Seriously, I was surprised about how good this show is. Hopefully I'm not alone in this sentiment but I'm rather excited about this playlist. Meshell Ndegeocello & Cassandra Wilson - The Chosen This one came up through a certain degree of combing through the computer. I decided to branch out pretty far with The Line-Up. This will happen from time to time. I'll decide to play some music a little further out from the show's comfort zone and then reel myself back in for the subsequent week. This week was provoked by my pulling Bonobo's Black Sands from the station's "No" shelf. I thought it was different but still sort of jazzy, so it found its way onto this week's show. Then the rest of the hour sort of formed around this one song. Robert Glasper - Maiden Voyage/Everything in its Right Place I figured I would want to start a little light. I want the audience to warm up, so I started with Robert Glasper. If you listen to The Line-Up, you know his work. It's courageous but palatable. It signifies that if I start the hour with Glasper, we're going to be taking some twists and turns, but it'll still be a pretty good ride.
