The Line-Up for 10-12-2012

I like the looks of this weekend like I like the look of this show. Eric Reed - Ask Me Now I felt I had to do something for Monk's birthday, so this seemed right for the 1 spot. Tycho - A Walk Roy Assaf - Eternal Child I've been emailing this dude about his latest album for some time now, and I finally got around to listening to his work a little. For all the labor involved here, I think we're both relieved he's finally getting his just due on a Line-Up. Donny McCaslin - Stadium Jazz Casting for Gravity is going to keep getting play for a while. The Gaslamp Killer - Seven Years of Bad Luck for Fun Zongo Junction - Oh Why? I knew I wanted to play Antibalas for this week's show, so this seemed like the perfect way to make a little Afrobeat set out of it. Antibalas - Dirty Money I'm looking forward to these guys playing the Pearl on Sunday. Flying Lotus - The Nightcaller Brad Mehldau Trio - Airegin You know when a standard is particularly infectious and you can't help but sing along with it. This is one of those songs. The Bad Plus - I Want to Feel Good, Pt. 2 I've been playing Made Possible constantly this week. I've played other albums just so I could compare them to Made Possible. Why I haven't yet taken the time to review this album and properly shower it with praise is beyond me. Flying Lotus - Tiny Tortures Dafnis Prieto Proverb Trio - Talking Too Much Hey, remember when this album released? Keep it in mind. Neal Evans - In Your Dream This track came up at random one day last week. I still love it. Flying Lotus - Until the Quiet Comes Robert Glasper Experiment - Dillatude #2 You really do need to cop Black Radio Recovered.

To Be Young, Gifted, Black, and a Jazz Enthusiast: Apparent Needle in a Haystack

About a month ago, Patrick Jarenwattananon of NPR's A Blog Supreme  put together a group of lists of recent gateway jazz albums from prominent young jazz enthusiasts and bloggers.  The Jazz Now Project was a rather brilliant idea and opened up a lot of discussion and awareness about the future of jazz and really shows what the field looks like right now.  Early on the the culmination of this project, Jarenwattananon opened the submission of suggestions not only to those he specifically asked but also to other readers of the blog and on the email list.  So it didn't take me long for me to submit my own Jazz Now list .  (And special thanks to him for linking the post on the compilation of Jazz Now submissions. I got my highest hit count yet of 29 readers because of him. I really need more readers.) 2022: I Lost My Father and Got Into Milton Nascimento

"There are years that ask questions and years that answer." --Zora Neale Hurston, Their Eyes Were Watching God Folks have been bandying that quotation around the last few weeks on Twitter, the social network that just won't quit no matter what literal Apartheid-era Afrikaner and dumb Bond villain does to stomp all over it, asking what 2022 was for them. I didn't know after ruminating on it for some time, ultimately joking it was a year that made very pointed, declarative statements about how my life herein would go in some ways and made phrases that trailed off into nothing, leaving me to guess its intentions in others. It was a year of feast and famine as my years often are, and always interesting, as I often hope my life is. I wasn't not entertained, even when I was sad or even when I was irritated, and that's always been my hope to approach life that way. But I still don't know what this year was to me.
