The Line-Up for 7-29-2011
Putting this show together was a headache like you wouldn't believe. The radio station switched to a new user interface that's faster and sleeker than the old system but also needs a lot of accommodations to fit our non-commercial, jazz needs. I just had to put together an hour, so it's hard to picture the strife the radio staff had to go through this week and all the headaches yet to come. Still, I was able to put together a solid hour of music for you.
Roy Hargrove Big Band - Roy Allen
A few tracks from Hargrove's Emergence are in rotation on my iPod right now which led me to the usual question, "When's the last time I played _____?"
Darcy James Argue's Secret Society - Redeye
Same thing here but I know I had to have played this more recently than Hargrove because Sebastien Noelle is a beast.
Terri Lyne Carrington - Unconditional Love
Hands down, this is my favorite cut from The Mosaic Project. Carrington is very tight all throughout this track and Esperanza Spalding weaves throughout the song giving just the right small touches.
Robert Glasper - Festival
I have a soft spot for this song.
Bill Frisell - 1968
The computer picked this one.
Josh Moshier & Mike Lebrun - We Will Go And...
This is the only new track I played this week. I love Moshier and Lebrun and I love their current (hopefully rejuvenated at full steam again) project, The Local Colorists. For them, I made sure to endure learning the process of adding new tracks into the new system.
Eric Harland - Voyager
Voyager: Live By Night is one of the best albums of the year, period.
Corea, Clarke and White - Captain Marvel
The same can be said for Forever, although whether one has a leaning toward the acoustic or the electric tracks on the album is highly dependent on one's mood at the time. I'm feeling the electric tracks today but Lord only knows about tomorrow.
Marco Benevento - You Know I'm No Good
Kory and I had this weird thing about Amy Winehouse. Last week, we were talking about her and how good her band is and how much she needed to get her life in order. The next day, she was found dead in her London apartment. Weird.
Mic Breaks
MF DOOM - Arrow Root
Flying Lotus - Zodiac Shit
J Dilla - Nothing Like This
Black Moth Super Rainbow - Drippy Eye
Roy Hargrove Big Band - Roy Allen
