The Line-Up for 3-16-2012

Whether or not KRTU and Nextbop were able to put together a day party during SXSW, this show would have happened. But instead of it being a "here's what you missed" episode of The Line-Up, this is a "here's what would have happened" show. Either way, it was pretty easy to put together material for this episode.

Le Bouef Brothers - Two Worlds
The Le Bouefs had hopes to roll through Austin just for the sake of touring but they couldn't make it through. They still got the 1 spot of this Line-Up, though.
MF DOOM - High John
The Whale - Kaskarones
I love Kory Cook's drumming in any context and I'm pretty sure I was present for this recording. It would have been awesome for this group to kick off our show.
Jeff Lofton & Alex Coke - Free Jazz Therapy
This would have been trippy enough for a SXSW day party we would throw, right?
Flying Lotus - Breathe . Something/Stellar STar
ERIMAJ - Conflict of a Man
The Jamire/Matt 1,2 punch would have been one of the best set combos of the show, hands down.
Matt Stevens - Stable Mates
Matt Stevens can do anything, weird and rockish or totally straight ahead.
Nujabes - Tsurugi No Mai
BADBADNOTGOOD - Medley (Bastard, Lemonade, Assmilk)
I was totally psyched in the courting of BBNG for this show. I felt real, palpable excitement that they might play for us. I think I may have missed them most of all, Scarecrow.
Robert Glasper Experiment - Smells Like Teen Spirit
Is this or is this not the it band of the moment across any genre?
Flying Lotus - Zodiac Shit
Thundercat - Daylight
I had a little time left at the end and this totally fit the bill of the idea of the show even though we've had no correspondance with Thundercat (Tt'd be totally awesome if we did, though. Anyone know how to get us in touch with this dude? We should totally do something with him.).

To Be Young, Gifted, Black, and a Jazz Enthusiast: Apparent Needle in a Haystack

About a month ago, Patrick Jarenwattananon of NPR's A Blog Supreme  put together a group of lists of recent gateway jazz albums from prominent young jazz enthusiasts and bloggers.  The Jazz Now Project was a rather brilliant idea and opened up a lot of discussion and awareness about the future of jazz and really shows what the field looks like right now.  Early on the the culmination of this project, Jarenwattananon opened the submission of suggestions not only to those he specifically asked but also to other readers of the blog and on the email list.  So it didn't take me long for me to submit my own Jazz Now list .  (And special thanks to him for linking the post on the compilation of Jazz Now submissions. I got my highest hit count yet of 29 readers because of him. I really need more readers.) I didn't know after ruminating on it for some time, ultimately joking it was a year that made very pointed, declarative statements about how my life herein would go in some ways and made phrases that trailed off into nothing, leaving me to guess its intentions in others. It was a year of feast and famine as my years often are, and always interesting, as I often hope my life is. I wasn't not entertained, even when I was sad or even when I was irritated, and that's always been my hope to approach life that way. But I still don't know what this year was to me.
