I honestly didn't have much of a clue of what to play this week. Hopefully, you'll still think I came correct as usual. Scott Tixier - Elephant Rose We've been talking this album up a bit at Nextbop recently and it's pretty well lauded at KRTU. That's certainly worth a play in the 1 spot. I had only vague ideas on what to do this week for the show. It took some twisting and turning to figure out what songs to play this week but I feel that this is a particularly strong show this week. You be the judge. Gregory Porter - Bling Bling This album is amazing. It instantly lifts your spirits. It's makes you think of home. It's everything a jazz vocal album should be. It oddly reminds me of early Will Downing. Be Good  is just great. Jonti - Twirligig Johnathan Blake - Blue News Things are all coming together for the Johnathan Blake album stream. Are you excited? Jack DeJohnette - Sonny Light I'm still liking Sound Travels . Geri Allen & Timeline - In Appreciation This should be a good show at the McAllister Auditorium on Sunday. The Line-Up in all its newness and splendor has returned to normal. The smooth jazz may return, but not for a long while. This week has new music (fringe, hip-hop inspired, and everything else you'd expect from me), previews to album streams, and some jammy jams. And peace was restored to the land. Enoch Smith Jr. - Wise Man Yes, I'm still playing Misfits  pretty compulsively. It's a shame I missed this during list season. Mister Barrington - Helter's Kelter Tigran Hamasyan - What the Waves Brought I still have A Fable in rotation and likely will for a while. Rusconi - Tempelhof I just got the new Rusconi album, Revolution . I'm still working my way through it, but I had to jump on getting a track in this week's show. John Scofield - Every Night is Ladies Night The computer picked this one but I really liked the beat. Besides, John Scofield has an intended appearance later in the show. J Dilla - Bye. Oh, yes, it's that time again. I don't have to worry so much about new music and the scene but I get to reflect on my favorite musician and his impact on jazz overall. Plus, I get to devote almost an entire hour to the 1970s, likely my favorite decade for music. The Joe Sample episode of The Line-Up has become a tradition for me and I'm always glad to continue it. Even groans around the radio station have lessened this time around. Even when Joe plays smooth, he plays it right and this show, with its heavy fusion vibe, should reflect that. Joe Sample - Hippies on a Corner This is likely the most modern track I play this week and even it's from 1995. This song is one of my major memories of Sample. I recall his tour hitting San Antonio shortly after Old Places, Old Faces released and my parents taking my sister and I to see it. We actually chanted for him to play this song. It's another one of those shows where I had only a few ideas of what to do but it all turned out pretty well in the end. Brad Mehldau Trio - Knives Out I had to think back to the last time I played this song, not only on this show but in general. It's been a while. Can you believe that Jeff Ballard has been the "new" drummer in this trio for going on seven years now? James Pants - Track 27 Rudresh Mahanthappa - Killer I felt like playing something off Samdhi  this week. It's good and you should know about it. Austin Peralta - Algiers This was actually a computer selection but I was thinking of pulling something from Endless Planets  this week anyway. Enoch Smith Jr. - A Misfit's Theme I'm making up for lost time with playing Misfits . dela - Get Busy Johnathan Blake - The Eleventh Hour We're streaming this album and Ben Wendel's Frame  at Nextbop the week before their February 21st releases on the Sunnyside label. Just keeping you on your toes. Thundercat - Is It Love? Sometimes the standout tracks on an album jump around. This track came up the other day and reminded me a lot of Stanley Clarke, which I guess is probably the point. RJD2 - Ghostwriter Enoch Smith Jr. - She Move Me Like I said, I'm making up for lost time. There's a groundswell that's building for Smith and I don't want to miss it. I didn't acknowledge this on the show but this episode of the Line-Up falls on Friday the 13th. So... yeah... there's that. I probably didn't say anything because it's not all that important. What is  important, though, is new music. Also important is that I can confirm a couple of our acts who will be performing at the KRTU/Nextbop day party at the Red House Pizzeria  in Austin, Texas, on March 14th during the South by SouthWest festival (which links up quite nicely to the KRTU/ Music for Listeners day party the rest of that week).
