The Line-Up 1-1-2010

So we've reached a new year and Friday came around all the same. I spent most of the day vegging out and watching Doctor Who, a show I've grown to appreciate all too late.  I don't really have much to say this week but I hope this show finds you well.  Personally, I'm putting all my neuroses on the back burner and saying I did pretty good today instead of focusing on the million screw ups I normally find. But when you get right down to it, it's all about the music so...

Medeski, Martin & Wood - Chasen vs. Suribachi
Esbjörn Svensson Trio - Letter from the Leviathan
This is actually my favorite E.S.T. song. There's something about when this group plays something dark in which they truly shine.
Al Jarreau & Kurt Elling - Take Five
I've never heard this song before I played it on the show but I mean... come on. Al Jarreau practically claimed this song after Brubeck and then you throw Kurt Elling into the mix. Done.
George Benson - So What
I'm playing this song solely because as I was talking with JJ Lopez as I was putting this show together this week, he offhandedly mentioned Benson. As I didn't have a lot on my mind for this particular show, I told him  not to be surprised if some George Benson showed up on this show. Well, here it is.
Brad Mehldau -  When It Rains
1) This is probably my favorite track off of Largo. It's the swelling that does it for me. It's those moments of loneliness that do it for me even more.
2) Look forward to Brad Mehldau releasing another album produced by Jon Brion early this year (this year, huh, that sounds weird).
Dafnis Prieto - Taking the Soul for a Walk
Miles Davis - Human Nature
I used to hear this song from time to time when I was a kid. I heard this Miles Davis cover before I even heard Michael Jackson's version. I didn't know it was on Miles's You're Under Arrest album until this last year (yep, still sounds weird). For some to hear Miles cover MJ, though, that'll be even more of a shock.
Robert Glasper - Rise and Shine
The Bad Plus - Tom Sawyer
Who spent New Year's Eve at home watching The Bad Plus perform at the Village Vanguard online? Huh, it could have been just me, could it?
